What is the
gradual progress in mental attitude we must attain? Let us listen to Bhagawan’s
pearls of wisdom today.
The attitude of
the worshiper and the worshiped is the seed of devotion (bhakti). First, the
worshiper’s mind is attracted by the special qualities of the object of
worship. The worshipper tries to acquire these special qualities. This is
spiritual discipline (sadhana). In the early stages of sadhana, the distinction
between worshiper and worshiped is full, but as the spiritual discipline
progresses, this feeling diminishes and, when attainment is reached, there is
no distinction whatsoever! Whatever be the object of worship one has grasped
and loved and sought by spiritual discipline, one should have firm faith that
the individual self (jivatma) is the supreme Lord (Paramatma). There is only
one wish fit to be entertained by the aspirant: the realisation of the Lord
(Iswara Sakshatkara). There is no room in the mind for any other wish.

What is the one
most important quality a spiritual aspirant must possess? Bhagawan explains
through a profound anecdote.
Lord
Dakshinamurthy was walking along a wide seashore alone, immersed in deep
meditation. He saw a dry little twig on the crest of a wave in the distance
being passed on from one wave to another, from trough to crest, from crest to
trough, until it was cast on the sands on the shore. He was astounded at the
egoism of the Ocean that would not give asylum to even a tiny twig. Sensing His
reaction, the Ocean declared, in words that He could understand, "Mine is
neither egoism nor anger; it is only the duty of self-preservation. I should
not allow the slightest blot to deface my grandeur. If I allow this twig to mar
my splendour, it will be the first step in my downfall." Then,
Dakshinamurthy smiled admiring the vigilance of the mighty Ocean. He pictured the
incident as a great lesson in spiritual endeavour. The slightest twig of
desire, if it falls on the mind, has to be immediately lifted out of the pure
waters and thrown off. That was the lesson to be learnt.

Discourse, Jul 29, 1969.

Often we do work
enjoying it fully and sometimes we do work, for the sake of it. Does it really
matter? Bhagawan explains the true purpose of our God-gifted physical and
mental faculties.
Only when the
sacredness of the body and the sacredness of the mind come together, can divine
strength be generated. With the help of the body, we should undertake sacred
tasks. With the help of the mind, we should develop divine thoughts. This body
is given to us and is intended for helping others. With the help of the body,
we should be able to do good service and help the community. Whatever work we
undertake, it should be done with a feeling that it is being done for the
pleasure of the Lord. Hanuman was one who had such sacred ideas, and he always
dedicated his work to the Lord. Our body is like the plastic cover on a wire.
Our mind is like the copper wire inside. Along with the body, when the mind
also joins, can divine strength flow into us.

What is the
secret behind the glory of Puttaparthi? What is the Divine Yoga we can learn
from its success? Bhagawan exhorts us with a noble goal today.
While doing
Kundalini Yoga, people practice breath control. In the breathing exercises,
inhalation is described as Purakam, exhalation as Rechakam and holding the
breath as Kumbhakam. These alone do not constitute the means to achieve yogic
power. To breathe in all that is good is Purakam. To give up all that is bad is
Rechakam. To retain in the heart what is good is Kumbhakam. Every human being
must practice this divine type of yoga; in fact this must become your primary
goal. Puttaparthi is a small hamlet. How has this village attained this eminent
state? You can find the answer for yourself. It was not merely a great piece of
good fortune or a lucky accident. It is due to the power of thought. Every
sacred thought has the power to find fulfilment. Hence scriptures declared: “As
you think, that you become (Yad bhavam tad bhavati)". Develop good
thoughts and naturally you will be entitled to the right of its fruits.
- Divine
Discourse, Nov 23, 1990.
Noble-minded
actions, virtuous qualities and sacred thoughts are the basic foundations of
good character. - Baba
